The best time to visit Sri Lanka varies by region. For the south and west coasts and the Cultural Triangle, travel between December and April is ideal. For the Hill Country, the best months are February to May. Expect monsoon rains from May to August (southwest) and October to November (northeast).
When packing for your Sri Lanka tour, bring light cotton clothing for the lowland heat, light woollens for the cooler hill regions, and modest attire for temple visits. Always remove shoes and hats before entering religious sites, and cover shoulders and knees. Avoid turning your back to Buddha statues when taking photos or exiting temples.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo is the main international gateway. Airport to Colombo city transfer takes about 30–45 minutes. All travel within Sri Lanka is by private air-conditioned vehicle, with one scenic train journey from Nanu Oya to Ella, one of the most picturesque train rides in the world.
Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which can be applied for online at eta.gov.lk.
Local SIM cards are available at the airport with excellent 4G coverage and Wi-Fi access at most hotels and resorts. The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Credit and debit cards are accepted in major cities, but it’s advisable to carry cash in rural or remote areas.
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry, but Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations are recommended. Use mosquito repellent, wear long sleeves in the evenings, and always drink bottled or filtered water to stay safe.
Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, trekking in tea country, relaxing on pristine beaches, or going on a wildlife safari, Sri Lanka offers something for every kind of traveler.
